The Americana Music Society is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 2015.
The Americana Music Society exists to foster and support the creation, performance and appreciation of Americana music in Memphis and the MidSouth.
Access for Americana artists to resources allowing them to create and thrive; access and education for the community allowing them to understand and consume American roots music; growth of Americana music scene in Memphis and MidSouth.
According to our friends at the Americana Music Association, “Americana is contemporary music that incorporates elements of various American roots music styles, including country, roots-rock, folk, bluegrass, R&B and blues, resulting in a distinctive roots-oriented sound that lives in a world apart from the pure forms of the genres upon which it may draw. While acoustic instruments are often present and vital, Americana also often uses a full electric band.”
We believe that the City of Memphis has a unique role in the story of Americana, as it does with so much of American music. Certainly Sun Studios, where the vision of Sam Phillips created a nexus of black and white music resulting in genre-bending artists who blended blues, country, rock and soul to chart a new course for popular music, must be considered Holy Ground in the Americana world. The roots of American music are in Memphis; therefore the roots of Americana are in Memphis.
